April 19, 2010

Seven NSCAD alumni are among the 25 artists on the long list for the 2010 Sobey Art Award.

Lucie Chan, MFA ’01; Graeme Patterson, BFA ’03; Emily Vey Duke, BFA ’98; and Vanessa Paschakarnis, MFA ’99 were named to represent the Atlantic region. Heather Benning, BFA ’04 and Robyn Moody, MFA ’06 were among the nominees from the Prairies and the North region, with Brendan Lee Satish Tang, BFA '98 one of the finalists from the West and Yukon region.

For two of the alumni, this represents their second Sobey Art Award nomination: Lucie Chan made the list in 2006 as did Graeme Patterson in 2009.

This year’s Sobey Art Award curatorial panel also includes NSCAD alumni Jen Budney, BFA ‘95, Mendel Art Gallery associate curator, and AGNS curator David Diviney, MFA ’98.

The shortlist for the 2010 Sobey Art Award will be announced on June 15. Selected work by the shortlisted artists will be featured in an exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal from October 8, 2010 to January 3, 2011. The winner will be announced during a gala event at the Musée on November 18, 2010.

The prize, which was founded in 2002 by the Sobey Art Foundation, is awarded annually to an artist under the age of 40. The winner receives $50,000, while the four other finalists each receive $5,000.
