A call to participate: It’s NSCAD’s 125th birthday in 2012 and we want you to get involved. Specifically, there are two events in which we invite contributions by students, faculty, staff and alumni. There is a call for artwork inspired by or about Anna Leonowens for an exhibition to be held March 5 to 10 at the Anna Leonowens Gallery. As well, plans are in the works for Artist for a Day, a big community event which will be held on the Halifax Waterfront on Saturday, May 12. Organizers are looking for ideas of big, participatory art projects that will get a lot of people involved. Read more
Open forum: Do you want to contribute to the plan being developed for NSCAD? Participation by faculty, staff, students and alumni is welcome at the wrap-up session of the curriculum, deficit reduction and facilities consultations. The groups, which have been meeting throughout January, will have a combined meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 1 starting at 8:30 a.m. in Room A206, Academy Building. Please let us know if you're coming by preregistering at nscad.ca.
Starfish Student Art Awards: Applications for the 2012 Starfish Student Art Awards are now being accepted and plans are in the works for the exciting 2012 gala. The awards have been made possible due to a generous donation from the Reznick family; prizes of $5,000 and $1,000 will be awarded. The winners are announced at the gala event on May 4 at the Port Campus. There will also be an exhibition of the final 10 nominated works at the Port Campus, from May 4 to 16 alongside the NSCAD 2012 Graduation Exhibition. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Feb. 10, 4 p.m. to Bernadette Kehoe in Student Services. Food for fines: For a two-week period, Jan. 30 to Feb. 10, Novanet libraries will be accepting nonperishable food items in return for reducing or clearing library fines. For every food item donated, fines will be reduced by $2 to a max of $20. Food collected by the NSCAD library will go to the NSCAD Food Bank.
Reminder: A reminder to grads that applications for the Grad Catalogue and Grad Show are due on Friday, February 10, less than two weeks away. If you don't have professional photos of your work but want to submit a work to the catalogue, we are offering free photo sessions to document your work. These photo sessions are on this Thursday, February 2 at the Granville Photo Department Lighting Studio from 1 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, February 7 at Port Campus in Room 210 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spots are booking up quickly so remember to make your appointment soon by e-mailing Siobhan Gallagher at nscad.ca. If you haven't picked up submission forms for the Grad Catalogue or Show, they are available at the Anna Leonowens Gallery. It's free and a great way to showcase your work! Sculpture Lecture Series: The Sculpture Area of NSCAD University and the Contemporary Art Projects Society (CAPS) has organized a series of public presentations. This series seeks to initiate a discussion about contemporary sculptural practices through talks by internationally known speakers. Here’s a look at upcoming lectures: Mierle Laderman Ukeles, New York-based artist, on Thursday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m. in the Bell Auditorium; Liz Magor, associate professor in visual arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, on March 30, 7 p.m., Bell Auditorium; Claire Bishop, associate professor in art history at CUNY Graduate Centre, on Friday, April 13, 7 p.m. at Bell Auditorium. Sobey Art Award: The Sobey Art Award is officially accepting nominations for the 10th anniversary of Canada's premier visual art award. The $50,000 award is given annually to a Canadian artist age 40 or under who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated. The five finalists of the 2012 Award will be announced in June, 2012. Selected work from the shortlisted artists will be featured in Toronto in an exhibition hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) from October to December, 2012. The winner of the 2012 Sobey Art Award will be announced during a gala event at MOCCA in Toronto in November, 2012. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 2012. ApEx: MediaEDGE Communications is seeking young artists to exhibit their work in ApEx, Atlantic Canada’s premier foodservice and hospitality show. Student's artwork will gain exposure to a variety of restaurants and assorted venues, which are looking to fill their walls and restaurants with new, vibrant art. Artists who exhibit their work would be listed the names in emails to delegates, on the ApEx website and will be included in the Show Guide. Summer in Finland: One of the most international creative residency programs in the arctic area is inviting applications for residencies for one to three months between July and November 2012. Centre for Art Tapes: The application deadine for the CFAT’s Artist-in-Residence Program 2012 is Friday, Feb. 3, 5 p.m. The program provides an opportunity to a local media artist for the development and experimentation of new work involving audio, video or new media. The successful applicant will receive up to $1,000 in-kind support in the form of production and editing memberships, access to facilities and equipment, a $1,700 artist fee, a $300 speaker fee for conducting a talk or workshop for the community about their project, and access to technical assistance during the residency. Panoramic photography: The EPSON International Pano Awards 2012 is dedicated to the art of panoramic photography. This is the third year of the awards, and we are pleased to announce an exhibition of the winners and highest scoring images at the PMA Photo Imaging trade show in Melbourne, May 2012, and more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Seeking films: The Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival (HIFF) is dedicated to the exhibition of film and video as art, in a noncompetitive setting free from commercial agendas. Focusing on the short film as a form of expression and on Canadian artists, the 6th Annual HIFF will take place from April 10-14, 2012. HIFF is looking for films for three screenings: Atlantic Canada Narrative Screening - celebrating films in narrative form from all four Atlantic provinces; Atlantic Women In Film Screening - in partnership with WIFT-AT celebrating films from Atlantic Canada made by women; and Atlantic Canada Experimental Screening seeking the unusual and unique from across the Atlantic provinces. Tuesday, February 7: Preparing for the World of Work: Life After NSCAD. This talk by Bernadette Kehoe, director of financial aid and student counseling at NSCAD, will cover what to do with a degree in art; career planning; owning and operating an arts-based business; networking with community organizations. 12 noon, in Room G219.
Wednesday, February 8: The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is presenting the premiere of the film The Mirror Boy, about identity and self discovery brought to light through the experience of a child living in the Africa Diaspora. 7 p.m., at Pier 21. Q&A session with Nigerian film director, Obi Emelonye, to follow. Free.

Friday, February 10: NSCAD will be hosting acclaimed filmmakers Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn for an artist talk and screening of The Journals of Knud Rasmussen. Friday, Feb. 10, 2 p.m., Academy Building, Room 206. About the film: "The great shaman, Avva, and his family are living on the land some distance from Iglulik, his home community that lately has taken up the teachings of Christian missionaries. Explorer/adventurer Knud Rasmussen pays Avva a visit, accompanied by two fellow Danes: trader Peter Freuchen and anthropologist Therkel Mathiassen. Rasmussen hears and records Avva’s life story and that of his wife Orulu.Their son, Natar, impulsively agrees to guide Freuchen and Mathiassen north to Iglulik. After a celebration, Rasmussen leaves to head west while Avva, facing strong headwinds, sets out with his family and guests en route for home. His beautiful daughter, Apak, has troubling dreams about the road ahead.”
