NSCAD University and the NSCAD Alumni Association are excited to present the third annual Artist for a Day on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., part of I LOVE LOCAL’s Open City.
Artist for a Day is a public celebration of the artist in all of us. Most of the activities take place in NSCAD’s Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Rd., Halifax, with satellite stations at the Canadian Immigration Museum at Pier 21, Mary E. Black Gallery, Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, Artists’ Annex and Seaport Farmers Market. Also, back by popular demand is steamroller printing, taking place at the Salter Parking Lot, adjacent to Bishop’s Landing.
The whole idea of Artist for a Day is exactly that; it’s a chance to find out what it’s like to be an artist if only for a day with the assistance of NSCAD faculty, students and alumni. At Artist for a Day, participants can: draw from a model; carve an image into wood and print it; make a cool outfit and model it; dye a T-shirt or cotton for a scarf; paint on a group canvas; create a Mother’s Day present from old keyboards; cast a toy soldier from pewter and much, much more. In planning for Artist for a Day, a Grimm’s Fairytale theme emerged, 200 years after the publication of the first edition. You can help decorate Hansel and Gretel’s house, climb onto the Princess and the Pea’s bed, and create storyboards for other Grimm’s tales.
“The goal of Artist for a Day is to open the doors and allow the community to come in and get a sense of what it’s like to learn and create at NSCAD,” said Peter Wünsch, President of the NSCAD Alumni Association.
Artist for a Day is organized by NSCAD’s Office of University Relations and the NSCAD Alumni Association, together with Pier 21 and the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design. NSCAD University acknowledges the generous support of Waterfront Development, Halifax Seaport, The Coast, Gordon Stirrett Wealth Management, Heinz Jordan & Co., Halifax Regional Municipality, Viewpoint Realty, Downtown Halifax, Demco EnCouleurs Inc., TD Insurance Meloche Monnex, Joan & Jack Craig, Electronic Products Recycling Association, Barrington Street Atlantic Superstore and Fishbone Prints in making Artist for a Day free and as accessible as possible.
