There’s a bite in the air and now it's December. Do you have your holiday shopping started?
Let the folks at NSCAD University help you with some wonderfully offbeat ideas for all the people on your list.
Give the gift of knowledge. Through the School of Extended Studies, NSCAD offers a wide range of courses for students of all ages. If your special someone has always wanted to know how to throw pottery on a wheel, get the most out of their brand new digital camera, or learn to sew—there’s a course at NSCAD for them. As well as popular courses in drawing, painting, photography and art history, there are a number of new courses too, from “The Art of the Kite” and “2D Digital Animation” to “The Corset,” which will take students step by step through the construction of a Victorian-style corset. Registration begins December 11. Pick up a brochure at the School of Extended Studies, 1892 Hollis Street, or browse online. Gift certificates are also available.

Give the gift of student art. You can find handmade vessels, platters, sculpture and ceramic wall art at the Ceramics Department’s end-of-term open house and sale. Taking place on the third floor of NSCAD’s Port Campus, the show opens Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m. and continues to Saturday, Dec. 15, running each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, students in the Jewelry and Metalsmithing Department are getting ready for their show and sale too. ADORNication features pendants, rings, bracelets, brooches and other examples of wearable art in styles and prices to suit everyone; it runs Dec. 11 to Jan. 6 at Seeds Gallery, across the street from NSCAD’s Port Campus. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m. And while you’re at Seeds, feel free to browse. The gallery features a diverse array of handmade crafts, paintings and original prints by NSCAD students and alumni. It’s located at 1099 Marginal Road; shop hours are Tuesdays to Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Give the gift of possibility. Have you ever been to NSCAD’s Art Supply Store? It’s packed with supplies for art making, including paints, paper, canvases, film, fabrics, dyes, pens and pencils—perfect for a junior Picasso or senior Seurat who just needs the tools to get started. If you’re not sure what they need, a gift certificate is always a welcome gift. Drop by the store at 1874 Hollis Street.

Give a gift to a grad. The NSCAD alumni ring celebrates a grad’s lifelong connection to their university days. Designed and produced by jewelry designer Karen Konzuk (BFA ’97), this stainless steel band incorporates the official NSCAD colour with a side incision of purple powder-coated finish. Inside the band is an engraved Latin inscription of NSCAD’s informal school motto nolo facere insipida, after John Baldessari's lithograph I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art. Many sizes are in stock. Drop by University Relations, 4th floor, 5163 Duke Street, or give Sue Sutherland a call at 902-494-8251 to make arrangements.
Give the gift of giving back.NSCAD’s Annual Fund supports a wide array of activity at NSCAD, from student scholarships to facility improvements to visiting artist programs. Our goal is to raise $125,000 in 2012, our 125th anniversary year. Make a gift in a friend’s name or make your donation a gift to yourself. We make it easy—you can give online by visiting our Annual Fund page, donate in person at the Office of University Relations, 4th Floor, 5163 Duke Street, call Chris McFarlane at 902-494-8175, or send a cheque in the mail to: NSCAD Annual Fund, 5163 Duke Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 3J6.
