Pitch perfect?

NSCAD students are participants in The Spark Zone's Pitch 101 competition.

An adventure tourism photography business. A socially conscious jewelry business. A non-profit artist-run centre.

The three NSCAD students pitching those ideas to a panel of judges are advancing to the next stage of The Spark Zone's Pitch 101 competition.

Recently, students in the class Entrepreneurship for Visual Arts (ARTS/CRFT 3110) took part in the first stage of the competition. Alex Arslanyan, Devon Berquist, and Ann McCosker were selected as NSCAD’s top three pitchers, moving on to the finale on Friday, competing with students from Saint Mary’s University, Mount Saint Vincent University and Nova Scotia Community College.

“Any and all interested people from the NSCAD community are welcome to attend the competition and support their fellow students/classmates,” says Kelly Markovich, who is teaching Entrepreneurship for the Visual Arts. “The winners of this competition will be based on an audience text vote, so the more supporters from NSCAD, the better the chances they have to win.”

The Spark Zone is providing the first place winner with a $500 cash prize, second place with $300, and third place with $200. The winners will also be invited to Invest Atlantic’s Pitch Camp or another larger university pitch session in the future.

The finale takes place in the Seton Academic Centre at Mount Saint Vincent University on Friday, Nov. 6, from 9 am to 1 pm.

The Spark Zone is one of a number of provincially funded “sandboxes” that has been set up since 2014; NSCAD is a partner in The Spark Zone along with Saint Mary’s University, Mount Saint Vincent University and the Nova Scotia Community College. Other sandboxes that NSCAD is participating in include the IDEA (Innovative Design and Entrepreneurship Academy) sandbox with Dalhousie and ShiftKey Labs with Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s, NSCC and Volta Labs.

The sandbox concept was developed at MIT and is intended to be an entrepreneurial space where students gather to foster new business ideas and innovation.
