Singer-songwriter Jenn Grant joins the line-up for the Back to School Special concert, set to take place tonight, Saturday, Sept. 22 at NSCAD’s Granville Mall.
It really is back to school for Jenn, who studied painting at NSCAD University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2006. At the fundraising concert, she’ll share the stage with her friend Buck 65, along with Matt Mays and Ghettosocks (both of whom are also former NSCAD students) Ria Mae, Tanya Davis and roots duo Acres and Acres.
"My band are I will play at the NSCAD Back to School Special tonight. because we love Nova Scotia and we love NSCAD and we need both of 'em," tweeted Jenn.
Fresh off an appearance at the Big Sound Festival in Brisbane, Australia, Jenn will perform songs from her new album, The Beautiful Wild. She debuted the album in a concert last night, Sept. 21, at the Spatz Theatre. After Saturday’s appearance, she’ll head off across Canada touring with Kathleen Edwards and Cuff the Duke.
The Back to School Special takes place on Granville Mall, NSCAD’s historic heart in downtown Halifax. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $30, and are available online at Eventbrite, http://125nscad.eventbrite.ca/. Tickets will be available at the door for $35 (cash only). All proceeds will benefit NSCAD.
The day’s festivities are organized by the NSCAD Alumni Association to celebrate the founding of the art school by Anna Leonowens 125 years ago. An educator and suffragette, Anna Leonowens is best known as the governess for the King of Siam’s 67 children—the “I” of The King and I. Besides the concert, there are exhibitions, film screenings and plans for a mass card stunt to create Anna Leonowens’ likeness on the side of Citadel Hill.
