Annual jewelry show opens Wednesday
November 21, 2011

When you purchase a necklace or bracelet from You Wish, the NSCAD Jewelry Show at Seeds Gallery, you can rest assured you’re not going to run into another person wearing the same cookie-cutter piece of jewelry.

“These are all unique and one-of-a-kind pieces,” says Mengnan Qu, a fourth-year jewelry and metalsmithing student from NanJing, China.

“This isn’t work that’s been pumped out of a factory,” adds Mary Lynn Podiluk, a fourth-year student from Saskatoon, Sask.

The two friends are organizing the annual show which takes place at Seeds Gallery from November 23 to December  4. They’re excited about what they and their classmates have been working on all term—necklaces, pendants, bracelets, rings and brooches made from sterling silver, copper, brass and resin, as well as materials you might not think of, such as wood, resin, ceramics and porcelain. Even “magic sculpture,” which Mengnan informs, is a super strong material used to glue airplane pieces together. Approximately 50 students will have work in the show.

Proceeds from the show will go back to the students, with 10 percent going to the Jewelry department to bring in visiting artists to speak with the students.

“If you are looking for well designed, hand created pieces made by students about to graduate and launch their careers, you should definitely come to the show,” says Mary Lynn, who wears an eye-catching necklace of her own design.

Prices range from $50 to $150. Seeds Gallery is located at 1099 Marginal Road, across from NSCAD’s Port Campus. The show’s opening is Wednesday, Nov. 23, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 4 p.m.

Fourth year jewelry students Mary Lynn Podiluk and Mengen Qu are the organizers of You Wish which will be held at Seeds Gallery from Nov. 23 to Dec. 4.
