Think of it as a purple-and-green toolbox right at your fingertips.

The NSCAD Mobile App is free and now available for download. Developed by AppArmor Mobile and NSCAD University, the app provides easy access to emergency phone numbers, including NSCAD security. It also has numbers for student wellness service such as academic counselling, mental health support and disability services.

The App will also allow the university to communicate directly to users of the NSCAD Mobile App with a bulletin. Scenarios could be stormy weather that makes travel to class unsafe or a power outage at one of the campuses.

Other features of the app include a news feed from Twitter, a map of Halifax showing campus locations, and tools such as a handy flashlight and loud alarm. NSCAD staff and students can also use the camera feature to take a photo of a security or safety concern (eg. a door propped open, a broken window, a leak) and send it directly to NSCAD’s Facilities Management.

Sharon Johnson-Legere, NSCAD’s VP of Finance and Administration, saw a similar security app from the Kingston, Ont.-based company at a conference of the Canadian Association of University Business Officers recently and approached the developers to partner with NSCAD.

Chris Sinkinson is the co-founder of AppArmor with his brother David. Both Queen’s University graduates, the brothers pitched Queen’s campus safety group about a mobile version of the university’s “blue light” alert system. The group liked the idea and the Queen’s App was launched in August 2012. Since then, AppArmor has created similar apps for York University and University of Victoria, and also several schools in Australia, including the University of Melbourne. The company is now working on apps for Brock University, Fanshawe College, and several other post-secondary schools.

The NSCAD Mobile App is suitable for iPhones and Android smart phones. It can be downloaded for free through the App Store or Google Play. Just search “NSCAD Mobile.”
