Incoming board chair Jeff Somerville with outgoing chair Grant Machum after the Board of Governors' AGM on September 17.

It’s a new academic year, a fresh start for NSCAD University.

The NSCAD Board of Governors held a double-header last night: the last meeting of its term, followed by the Annual General Meeting.

New roles were assigned, appointments renewed, with new governors stepping up and others stepping down.

Jeff Somerville, on the board for the past two years and chair of the Audit and Risk Committee, becomes board chair, while Grant Machum becomes past chair. Other executives of the board include Julia Rivard-Dexter, vice chair; John Carruthers, treasurer, and Kim Knoll, secretary.

“I see NSCAD as central to the creative and cultural economy in Nova Scotia,” says Mr. Somerville, a consultant with the Venor Group, an executive search company. “It’s got such great bones, and by that I mean its reputation, its students, staff, faculty and alumni and the respect it has. I look forward to the opportunity to participate in making NSCAD even stronger.”

Joining the NSCAD board are Greg Bambury of Medavie Inc., Gary Edwards, president of the Edwards Family Charitable Foundation and drummer with The Hopping Penguins, and student representatives Gabriel Soligo, SUNSCAD president, and Julie Hall, SUNSCAD VP Finance. Rebecca Young, University Librarian, and Rudi Meyer, Associate Professor, Design, are the new faculty reps as Professors Matthew Reichertz and Jane Milton have completed their one-year terms.

Past secretary Margaret Fountain retires from the board after more than 15 years of service to NSCAD University. The long-serving governor is also one of NSCAD’s most generous. Last summer, Margaret and David Fountain made a $3-million gift to NSCAD.

“It’s been a great pleasure and privilege to be on this board,” said Mrs. Fountain, who was appointed Life Governor. “We have the best president now and I wanted to wait (to retire) until we had the right president.”
