The Dome Project represents the very latest in viewing technology and storytelling. Located in NSCAD's Academy Campus, it will be on view during Open Doors Halifax.

NSCAD is pleased to participate in Doors Open Halifax 2016 by swinging wide the doors to its Academy Campus, 1649 Brunswick Street, Halifax.

Built in 1878, the Academy Campus is full of history, but is also brimming with new, innovative technologies. As a part of Doors Open Halifax and in partnership with The KA’NATA Foundation, Halifax will get the first glimpse of The Dome Project – a 7.6-metre, domed screen, which will offer a new way of storytelling.

A prototype is currently being developed which offers 360-degree projection that can be experienced while sitting comfortably in beanbag chairs, looking up and enjoying the experience of immersive sound and motion capture technology.

The dome represents the very latest in viewing technology, explains Brookes Diamond, director of The KA’NATA Foundation. “In my experience of running shows for numerous years, Halifax loves to be on the cutting edge. It always has,” says Diamond. “If you can bring something to this city that is happening in the world, that the world is seeing and we’re missing, Halifax loves it. They will go for it.”

The final version, based on the prototype developed at NSCAD, will be a 50-foot dome installed temporarily on the Halifax waterfront, in partnership with the Canadian Maritime Heritage Foundation and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic; it will be completed in the fall of 2016. This technology puts Halifax and NSCAD’s Division of Media Arts at the leading edge of immersive virtual reality innovation.

Doors Open Halifax takes place at various locations throughout Halifax on Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5, 10 am to 4 pm. Leading up to Doors Open, Jac Gautreau, the Project Creative Producer, will be available by drop in or appointment at NSCAD’s Academy Campus, including on May 11 (2-5 pm), May 12 (9 am to 12 noon) and May 27, 1-5 pm.
