Recognizing long-serving staff
January 11, 2016

At NSCAD’s Holiday Party, held to christen the new Art Bar + Projects and Cabaret Voltaire-Atlantique, long-serving employees were honored and recognized for their service.
Topping the list are Neil Thompson, manager of the school store, and Chris Nielsen, director of Photographic Services, both of whom celebrated their 35th year anniversary at NSCAD.

In recognition of their long service, we asked them five questions about their NSCAD experience.

Chris Nielsen
Q.  How did you come to work at NSCAD?

A. "I was introduced to the College by a weaving student and enrolled in the Design Program in 1977.  I was asked to come back and work in the Photography Department in 1980."

Q. Looking back, what advice would you have appreciated as a first-timer to NSCAD?

A. "I think I would advise a first-timer to explore all that NSCAD has to offer, find a passion, and perhaps go back to school."

Q. Favorite NSCAD memory/moment?

A. "Best safe answer:  Being a student. Second, best is yet to come."

Q. What’s the best place to get lost at Fountain Campus?

A. "Physically: Seeds/Fashion studios.  Mentally: The book stacks of the NSCAD library. "

Q.  If you were a student at NSCAD, what class would you take and why?

A. "Jewellery or Art History.  I really respect the skill metal smithing requires and the beauty of the object. Art History is a window on the past that intimately reflects the politics and society of a given period in time."

Q. How did you come to work at NSCAD?

A. "it was serendipity. a friend of mine was applying to a "college store in n.s." and said i ought to apply too as i was looking for another job. she gave me the notice and i applied on a whim and here i am."

Q. Looking back, what advice would you have appreciated as a first-timer to NSCAD?

A. "the files that went walkabout before i took over the job would have been a tad helpful."

Q. Favorite NSCAD memory/moment?

A. "well,  there are a lot of those. at one time students and staff could bring their dogs. i kept dog biscuits at my desk so the dogs would sometimes come and visit without their humans."

Q. What’s the best place to get lost at Fountain Campus?

A."there is one, but i'm not telling."

Q.  If you were a student at NSCAD, what class would you take and why?

A. "drawing. art is about looking and looking constantly and thinking very hard about what you are seeing. it is a visual and intellectual exercise. making a mark is instinctive. it always starts with drawing."

Congratulations also to these employees, celebrating 25, 20, 15, 10 and five years at NSCAD. Thank you for your service and dedication to NSCAD!
