April 21, 2011

Ten emerging artists, representing each of the visual arts disciplines at NSCAD University, have been named as finalists for the second annual Starfish Student Art Awards.

Established in 2010 by property developer and art collector Louis Reznick to recognize and promote exceptional young talent, the juried award celebrates creative excellence in sculpture, printmaking, drawing, painting, film, photography, intermedia, textiles, ceramics, and jewellery and metalsmithing.

“The art world is built on recognition,” says David B. Smith, NSCAD University president. “This premier award provides our young artists with vital visibility as they embark on their careers, while benefitting them financially. I want to thank Mr. Reznick and Starfish Properties for their continued support of this visionary initiative.”

A total of $10,500 in prize money will be awarded this year. The winning artist will receive a $5,000 purchase prize, with his or her piece added to a special section of the permanent President’s Collection at NSCAD University known as “The Reznick Family Art Bank.”  Two semi-finalists awards of $1,000 will also be announced, with each of the remaining nominees receiving $500.
