Stirring the pot

Catherine Blanchet, Tea Party, 2013. Oil on canvas, 81 x 123 cm.

Artist Cat Blanchet is a provocateur: she likes to see what happens when the wild collides with the prim and proper. There are ducks in the china cabinet; crows attacking the birthday cake; and sparrows helping themselves to the Peek Freans.

“I really enjoy the combination of domestic rituals and civilization versus the chaos that wild animals bring,” says Cat, 23, a NSCAD student from Jeddore. “I like to mix them together to create something slightly unsettling.”

NSCAD University presents At Home, a show of paintings by Cat Blanchet at Dine by Design East. Her paintings will be on display on the mezzanine level of the Olympic Community Hall during the four days of the event, from Friday, Oct. 30 to Sunday, Nov. 2.

Unfortunately, the Fine Art major won’t be here to enjoy the spotlight—but don’t feel too badly for her. She’s doing an independent study class in Paris, renting a studio and filling up on inspiration–and croissants too, no doubt!

As well as the NSCAD show, several galleries will have pop-up locations at Dine By Design East. Participating galleries are: Secord Gallery, Studio 21 Fine Art, Swoon Gallery, Parenthesis Gallery and Teichert Gallery (formerly Art Sales and Rental Gallery at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia). All the galleries will have work to view and purchase.
