The table is set for Dine By Design East
September 15, 2015

Christopher Joyce (BFA 1989) and Suzanne Saul (BFA 1987) of Attica Furnishings pose with NSCAD President Dianne Taylor-Gearing at their dining room installation at last year's Dine By Design East. This year, the pair are back, doing a room called "Modern Chinoiserie."

We can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with! Dine By Design East offers designers a challenge: here’s a 10-foot-by-10-foot plywood box. C’mon dazzle us!

Ten design teams from Halifax to Toronto have picked up the gauntlet and will unveil their creativity at Dine By Design East, October 1 to 4 at the Olympic Community Centre, 2304 Hunter St., Halifax. This is the third year for this unique and stylish event presented by East Coast Living magazine. Proceeds support the Amber Harkins Memorial Scholarship at NSCAD University. More than $40,000 has been raised to date.

Participating teams include: Nova Tayona Architects, Costandi Designs, Avondale Construction, TOSS Solutions, Lovely Nova Design, Brainchild Interiors, and Breakhouse. Back by popular demand are: Jonathan Legate of Jonathan Legate Interior Consultation; Suzanne Saul and Christopher Joyce from Attica; and Janice Bates-Hawkins of Signature Design.

"Dine By Design East is a way for the design community to show its support to the next generation of design professionals at NSCAD,” says Jonathan Legate, who founded the event along with Suzanne Saul of Attica. “Every year I am amazed by the creativity and quality put forward by the designers and chefs. This event is truly unique and of such a high standard. I am proud to be a co-founder.”

NSCAD alumnus Alan Bateman (BFA 1988) was commissioned to paint a surfboard for Jonathan Legate's dining room, "Surf and Turf." The painting will be auctioned at the Dine By Design East Gala on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The night of the Gala and Auction on Thursday, Oct. 1 offers the public the first peek at the dining rooms—as well as a chance to sample delectable nibbles from Atlantic Canada’s top chefs.

On Friday, Oct. 2, fashion design gets the spotlight. Join us for lunch as Atlantic Canada’s top designers and emerging talents show us outfits from their fall lines.

On the weekend, Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4, drop by the venue to explore the dining room installations and pop-up galleries at your leisure. There will be tours and seminars running throughout both days. HGTV personality Meredith Heron, who recently launched her own fabric collection, will make a return visit giving a fun and funny talk about her design philosophy. And, if seeing all those dining rooms gets you hungry, there will be gourmet food trucks parked right outside.

Clothing designed by NSCAD student Donn Sabean was featured at last year's lunch-time fashion show at Dine By Design East. This year, fall fashions by recent NSCAD grads Becky Gartner and Katherine Cordero will be featured.
