NSCAD is pleased to announce the winners of the #WhereIFindIt competition. The contest received many wonderful entries from promising artists whose careers will be interesting to follow. For this reason, choosing the first, second and third place entrants was challenging. After much deliberation, the names of those winners can be shared.
And the envelope, please:
- First prize goes to Dara Blanchard of Fredericton. Dara, who just graduated from Fredericton High School and is NSCAD bound this fall, wins a MacBook.
- Second prize, consisting of a Wacom Tablet, goes to Erick Rodriguez of Toronto.
- Third prize, a year-long mentorship with a NSCAD faculty member, goes to Charlotte Fresia, a student at Oxford Regional Educational Centre in Oxford, NS.
High school students were invited to enter the contest simply by posting images of their artwork with the WhereIFindIt hashtag and explaining what inspires them.
“When I look at this picture I see a talented photographer, role model, teacher, friend and most importantly an amazing father,” wrote Dara Blanchard, in posting a black-and-white photograph. “He continues to inspire me each and every day with his hard work and always reminds me to put myself out there and try new things. This is #WhereIFindIt #NSCAD.”
Charlotte Fresia submitted an image of a collage which included maps, newspaper clippings, drawings and a locket. “What inspires me? Travel. Seeing new people. #WhereIFindIt.”
The contest was promoted using original artwork around the slogan “Inspiration Lives Everywhere.” It was developed by the Halifax marketing agency Impact in association with NSCAD’s Office of Admissions. There were more than 60 artworks entered to the contest, which attracted thousands of votes via Facebook.
“In Admissions we see amazing creativity every day; best job in the world! The contest allows everyone else to see the great things high schoolers are creating too," says Terry Bailey, Director of the Office of Admissions and Enrolment Services. "The prizes are exceptional tools to encourage continued creativity and our thank you for sharing inspiration."
The selection committee took Facebook likes into account in deciding winners, as well as the merit of submissions.

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.” – Pablo Picasso. For my entry I decided to illustrate nature and cities that artistically influence and inspire me. The quote I chose represents my mindset. Talent is important but it needs to co-exist and be strengthened by hard work.”
