Working with well-known local author, Carol Bruneau, students will work on outlining the basics of a biography or autobiography. In conjunction with the Bookbinding course, students can make their own journals, and then take the next 5 weeks to discover how best to immortalize their own history or that of someone else. Carol Bruneau is the author of two critically acclaimed collections of short fiction titled, “After the Angel Mill” (1995), and, “Depth Rapture” (1998). She has also written three novels, titled, “Glass Voices” (2007), which was named a Globe and Mail Best Book; “Berth” (2005); and, “Purple for Sky” (2000). Published in the U.S. under the title, “A Purple Thread for Sky”, the novel won the 2001 Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award as well as the Dartmouth Book Award. Class limit is 12.

This two day workshops will cover the basics of making your own glass bead
using glass rods and a propane torch. Using different colours and opacity
of glass, truly creative beads can be created! Lampworking is a type of glasswork that uses a gas fueled torch to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by shaping with tools and hand movements. It is also known as flameworking or torchworking, as the modern practice no longer uses oil-fueled lamps. Although the art form has been practiced since ancient times, it became widely practiced in Murano, Italy in the 14th century. Lampworking differs from glassblowing in that glassblowing uses a blowpipe to inflate a glass blob known as a gob or gather, thereby inflating it by blowing air into the blowpipe, whereas lampworking manipulates glass either by the use of tools, gravity, or tools such as pliers. Bring a notebook to the first class. Class limit is 10
