Basic sewing techniques applied to clothing construction are introduced. Using industrial equipment and hand sewing, students consider appropriate uses of seams, pockets, darts, buttons and buttonholes, zippers, trims and closures, in relation to garment production. Through the making of a handbag, pillow or other article of choice, students practice a different method each week and may choose to create samples for future reference. Bring one metre of washed, unbleached cotton, pins, scissors and tape measure to the first class. Some supplies will be provided. For safety, students must wear close toed/heeled shoes. Basic knowledge of sewing and access to home machine is an asset. Class Limit is 12.

Individuals will go beyond basic sewing to explore techniques used to design and manufacture a skirt. Basic skirt styles include bias-cut, gore, flared, pleated and A-line. Pattern development and alterations are considered through demonstrations of draping techniques and flat pattern drafting. Fabric selection, cutting, fitting, and a variety of construction techniques are covered. Students bring sewing supplies including scissors, tape measure and pins. A supply list will be discussed at the first class. For safety, students must wear close toed/heeled shoes. Prerequisite: Introduction to Sewing Techniques or equivalent. Class Limit is 12.
