This course introduces the principles of two-dimensional design in the context of graphic design. Please note that this is not a computer class but rather a course in which you will be introduced to the fundamental approaches to graphic design as you develop your conceptual process, design skills and presentation techniques. Students will use a variety of graphic methods to communicate ideas with images, typography, narrative illustration, and decoration. As they review the basic concepts and vocabulary of design, students learn how to critique and discuss visual work. The emphasis throughout is on exploring design through the dynamics of form, letterform and typographic elements and graphic design as a communication tool.

Students attending this workshop will develop the typographic skills that are required to produce professional graphic design. The emphasis will be on learning the fundamentals of correct typesetting and on how a deeper understanding of proper typesetting can produce better design that actually communicates to the reader. These are working sessions intended to develop practical skills. Students are expected to have taken at least one course in basic typography and will need to bring their own laptop and have a licensed copy of Adobe InDesign.
All students are required to submit a portfolio for review to the office of The School of Extended Studies by June 25, 2012. The portfolio should include a current resume. Successful applicants will be notified by email on, or before, July 4, 2012.
