Introductory Drawing
This introductory course deals with still life, the nude figure, the environment, and different approaches to drawing through observation. A variety of techniques and media are explored through studio work, discussion and slides. Critiques of each student’s work are central to the learning process. This course is suitable for those working on their portfolio for admissions to NSCAD. Bring pencils (B range), kneaded eraser, white eraser, newsprint pad (approx. 18x24”) and two bulldog clips to the first class.

Intermediate Drawing: Heads and Hands
From the anatomical and measured drawings of the Masters, through to self-portraits of expressive power and comic interpretations, this course will help students learn to draw the challenging subject of heads and hands. Discover how to draw the head and hands in action—in any position—conveying the energy of the pose. The ultimate goal of this course is to learn how to simplify and demystify the complexities of a “likeness.” You will also examine great masters’ portraiture drawings and compare different periods to enhance your understanding. Bring pencils (B range), kneaded eraser, white eraser, newsprint pad (approx. 18x24”) and two bulldog clips to the first class.

Creative Sketchbook
This course is for those who wish to learn ways of developing their sketchbooks into resourceful, creative, investigative and personal art books. Working with a variety of media, applications and approaches, students will develop creative imagery through assignments that engage them in drawing, painting, collecting artifacts, and working with collage. Additionally, students will record ideas, experiences, and personal reflections from which to develop content. Each week students will be introduced to new approaches of combining media practice with playful yet challenging exercises that lead to a final artwork. Bring pencils (B range), white eraser, sharpener, and sketchbook (hard cover spiral-bound 8.5x11” or larger) to the first class. The instructor will provide specialized materials used during each class.
 Class Limit is 20.

Intermediate Drawing: Perspective & Architectural
Students will learn the basics of perspective drawing and how it relates to architectural sketching. Slide discussions and group critiques compliment studio work. Although the course will help to build a greater sensibility of drawing materials, it is recommended that students have some knowledge of drawing using dry, black drawing media. Bring pencils (B range), white eraser, newsprint pad (approx 18"x24") and two bulldog clips to the first class.

125 SUMMER INSTITUTE

The School of Extended Studies is kicking off NSCAD’s inaugural Summer Institute as part of NSCAD’s 125th year celebration. We are hosting three weeks of workshops designed to encourage new artists and inspire the professional.
Tuition includes: A welcome reception Monday evening, morning coffee breaks and a closing lunch on Friday.
-  Group excursions will be available each week at an additional cost.
-  Registration closes two weeks prior to the start of each course.

Often artists and designers find it challenging to communicate their ideas to others as well as outline the steps to take to see their work realized. Through guided visualization and using drawing as a medium instructor Michael Fernandes will bring students full circle when working through ideas. Concepts around installations, public art work, building design or any range of 3 dimensional work is first established on paper. This course allows students the opportunity to open their creative shell and allow themselves no limits on seeing their ideas to fruition on paper. Tuition: $360 + HST |   Class Limit: 18


Understanding the Masters
