Introductory Watercolour
This course introduces the foundation of painting with watercolour. Some of the unique qualities of watercolour painting include vibrant colours, transparency effects, and immediacy. This studio class will give instruction, demonstrations and critiques in colour design, light and value studies, and fundamental techniques, as students work from subjects such as still life, landscape, abstraction, and imagination. NEW Mixed Media Painting
For both beginner and experienced painters, this course expands your approach to paint by introducing a broad range of painting applications. Projects introduce you to image-transfer techniques, collage and mixed media composites. You will experiment with various painting techniques such as frottage, layering, stencils, wax (encaustic painting) and impasto. Through instructional presentations of contemporary work and critiques you will be encouraged to further your studio work while learning about contemporary painting. Introductory Acrylic Painting
Acrylic painting is quite a versatile medium, demonstrations and studio work in this course will consider methods to evoke moods through use of colour, texture, shape and composition. Students will experiment with gel acrylic mediums and paint application using both traditional and non-traditional tools. Lighting and colour theory are discussed. Students will work on independent projects using photographic sources, a live model, and still-life. NEW Intermediate Acrylic: Still Life Investigation
This intermediate painting course investigates historical, contemporary and cultural influences of still life painting. A variety of works by still life artists will be introduced to incite the theme for each lesson. Additionally, composition, light sources, varying colour pallets, painterly style, pattern, personification and narrative will be examined and reviewed. This course is designed for students who have introductory experience and knowledge of colour theory, acrylic paint application, use of materials and basic drawing skills. Please bring to the first class: a sketchbook, 2b and 4b pencils, eraser, sharpener, spray bottle for keeping paint wet, painting rag, plastic pallet knife, pallet, (alternative: pallet paper pad and masonite board to tape paper to), apron or smock to protect clothing, camera, as well as the brushes and paint colours on the materials list provided. Class limit is 15.

125 SUMMER INSTITUTE

The School of Extended Studies is kicking off NSCAD’s inaugural Summer Institute as part of NSCAD’s 125th year celebration. We are hosting three weeks of workshops designed to encourage new artists and inspire the professional.

Tuition includes: A welcome reception Monday evening, morning coffee breaks and a closing lunch on Friday.
-  Group excursions will be available each week at an additional cost.
-  Registration closes two weeks prior to the start of each course.

Oil Portraits Workshop

This workshop will focus on methods of approach to portraiture. Students will work from photo grids, mirrors, and life. The class will cover technical aspects such as colour theory, colour exploration, methods of paint application, staining and underpainting, working on a large scale, and using a variety of surfaces.  Each day will begin with exercises pertaining to the project for the day. Students will explore materials and techniques and develop their own project. The bulk of the day will be spent working on the portrait. At the end of the day there will be a critique where the class can observe and discuss the work together. Students will be encouraged to keep a journal / sketchbook of the week's projects. There will be a show of the work in the exhibition space on the 2nd floor and students may invite friends to come and view their paintings.  Tuition: $360 + HST  |  Class limit: 12.


The Figure in Watercolour

This week-long watercolour workshop focuses on the human form. Morning sessions will be centred on painting and drawing from a model, both nude and clothed. Afternoon sessions will concentrate on composition, colour and imagery based on work from the mornings. Representation of the human form from realism to more abstract will be examined, discussed and experienced. Landscapes in Watercolour

This course will cover both the theory and the techniques of landscape painting in watercolour. It will explore the challenges of painting the landscape through an analytical approach to perspective, composition, relationships between colour and tone, and manipulation of the particular paint media. Instruction will address the difference between working en scene and using sketches and photographs. Weather permitting the course will be divided between field trips and studio time. The novice painter will be encouraged and the experienced painter will be challenged. This week-long workshop will provide students the opportunity to work in the company of other artists; through group or individual critiques, it will give the student a more complex approach to self-expression, use of material, formal considerations, and techniques. Based primarily on observational painting from still life, figure, and landscape, this work shop will provide a thorough experience for the beginner, and will consolidate and strengthen experience for the intermediate painter. Landscape and Symbol

This week-long workshop will focus on landscape painting arising from experience and memory, and being symbolic or allegorical instead of merely descriptive. Students will progress from observed reality (plein-air), to working from memory in the studio where more personal, internal work will be completed.
