
This course focuses on improving the overall quality of portfolios required for application to study in the visual arts at the post secondary level. Topics are based on NSCAD and other national art school requirements and include critiquing and selecting work, producing images of work, and writing an essay. Studio exercises provide an understanding of essential problem-solving and observational drawing skills. Personal critiques of work and recommendations for additional work are provided. For Halifax courses, a tour of NSCAD is also provided. Bring , a sketch book, a notebook and pens to first class. Additional supplies are discussed. Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 11 or higher. Class limit is 24.

Sketchbooks are an artist’s companion used to record inspiration. Focused sketchbook work makes up an important part of NSCAD University and other national art schools portfolio requirements. In this course students will use their sketchbook to document, archive and collect information of interest. Sketchbook work will focus on mark making, preparatory sketches, notes, text, observational drawing and samples of creative writing. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of materials, including pencils, india ink, graphite sticks, charcoal and unconventional tools to create innovative mark making. Students are required to bring a sketchbook (no smaller than 8” x 10”) to the first class. Class limit is 24.
