Black and White Photography
Learn the art of black and white film photography including the proper use of a manual 35mm camera! Students will have the opportunity to capture their ideas on film and develop their own negatives and prints in a fully equipped darkroom. The course begins with activities to familiarize and build confidence in the areas of understanding exposure, controlling the camera, composing the shot, and developing the negative and final print. Following this, participants will propose and work through a final independent series based on their own interests and ideas. All materials are provided.

Jewellery Making
In this course, students will experience demonstrations and hands on studio projects in manipulate paper and casting with resin to create thoughtfully considered jewellery creations in the form of rings, bangles and simple pendants. Students will explore and experiment with copper, sterling silver and various alternative materials. All materials are provided.

Computer Animation
In this course students will learn various techniques of animation using the animation/drawing software Pencil along with Adobe Photoshop and Apple’s iMovie. This course introduces traditional animation principles and techniques and exposes students to animation workflow, from idea conception to creation. Students will work hands-on in groups and independently to create moving images using readily available equipment and technology.

Introductory Ceramics
In this course, student will learn various techniques of working with clay using pinching, coiling, slab building, carving, texturing and throwing on the potter’s wheel. Using these skills, students will create a variety of artworks including, pinch pots, coiled forms, tiles and sculptures.  All students will be able to complete multiple projects, working individually and in groups to create fired and glazed clay creations. All supplies are provided.

Drawing and Painting
This class uses basic techniques to unravels the mysteries of successful drawing and painting. Students will experiment with gesture drawing, blind contours, and respresentation drawing to emphasizing observational drawing skills. Additional excercises will focus on concepts that are vital to an artist’s education: composition, line, value, perspective, and colour. Students will strengthen their skills through a series of projects and will learn the importance of observation to better interpret the world around us. All materials are provided.

Fashion Rethought
Explore the art and imagination of re-purposed and recycled fashion design and construction. Students will re-purpose and transform pants into skirts, wool sweaters into hats, scarves, mitts, and leg warmers, t-shirt makeovers, and pillowcase blouses! Basic hand sewing techniques and proper use of a sewing machine will be covered; but leave your sewing rules at home because this is not your high school home-ec sewing class! Most materials are provided.

Portfolio Preparation
This one-week intensive course focuses on improving the overall quality of portfolios required for application to first-year credit visual arts study. Topics are based on NSCAD and other national art school requirements and include critiquing and selecting work, producing images of work, and writing an essay. Studio exercises provide an understanding of essential problem-solving and observational drawing skills. Personal critiques of work, recommendations for additional work and a tour of NSCAD are provided. Bring a notebook and pen to first class. Additional supplies are discussed.

Sketchbook Development
Sketchbooks are an artist’s companion used to record inspiration. Focused sketchbook work makes up an important part of NSCAD University and other national art schools portfolio requirements. In this course students will use their sketchbook to document, archive and collect information of interest. Sketchbook work will focus on mark making, preparatory sketches, notes, text, observational drawing and samples of creative writing. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of materials, including pencils, india ink, graphite sticks, charcoal and unconventional tools to create innovative mark making. Students are required to bring a sketchbook (no smaller than 8” x 10”) to the first class.
