We have a history of inspiring youth through our Saturday Children's Art Classes since 1887 and are one of the earliest known examples of this in North America. Children in grades 1 – 6 participate in a variety of fun age-appropriate activities that introduce basic visual arts skills.

Mixed Media:  Oh Canada!
Rest your vocal cords, but prepare yourself for a journey through the past. What do you love about Canada? Where have you been? What makes Canada unique? In this course students will answer these questions while creating patriotic, mixed media artworks. Working in groups and individually, students will create murals and mini masterpieces all about our home and native land, Canada! All materials are provided.

Mixed Media:  Up, Up, and Away
I spy with my little eye, sometime that is feathery and fast. What could it be, you ask? Well look up! In this course, students will use the sky as inspiration to consider birds in flight, planes at night, weather within sight, all to create art of delight. Students will experiment with paint, crayons, pastels, tissue paper, paper mache and more. All materials are provided.

Mixed Media: Trains, Planes and Automobiles
Got places to go? Start your engines and drive on over to NSCAD and spend time experimenting with a variety of materials while considering modes of transportation including planes, trains and automobiles. Working two and three dimensionally, students will create individual and group projects. All materials are provided.

Mixed Media: Walk in the Park
All great artists find delight in nature. Emily Carr, the Group of Seven, Vincent Van Gogh, Andy Goldworthy and more, have all used the beauty of nature as inspiration for creation. In this course, students will take a 'walk in the park' and see for themselves the wonders of nature. Creating individual and group projects, students will use a mixed media approach to create small and large scale work.  All materials are provided.

Mixed Media:  Nautical Navigation
Come sail aboard the SS NSCAD and navigate the challenging, yet rewarding waters of art making. Set against the Port Campus, Georges Island and the Halifax Harbour, students will use field trips, presentations and demonstrations to create dynamic nautical masterpieces. Using the sea as inspiration, students will use pencil, markers, crayon, paint, tissue paper and papier mache and more. All Aboard! All materials are provided.

Mixed Media: Under the Sea
Set sail across the sea this summer and draw inspiration from the ocean! Students will navigate their way through the process of art making using painting, drawing, collage, mixed media and sculptural techniques. Set against the backdrop of the Port Campus, Georges Island and the Halifax Harbour, the world is your oyster when it comes to finding inspiration! Students will work individually and in groups to create maritime masterpieces. All materials are provided.

Mixed Media: Make Your Own Masterpiece
Using art history to explore art making, students will develop their own unique masterpieces! From cave paintings, Egyptian art and Byzantine mosaics to learning from more recent  artists like Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Pollock and Warhol. Individual and group projects will focus on drawing inspiration from such movements and influential artists and exploring there characteristic techniques. Students will explore various drawing, painting and collage techniques. All materials are provided.

Mixed Media: Landscape and Cityscape
Paint the town… well… whatever colour you feel like! Use the city, sea and land as inspiration to develop mixed media artworks. Explore various materials including pastels, ink, pencil crayons, watercolor, and tempera paint. Individual and group projects will be created. All materials are provided.
