Set sail across the sea this summer and draw inspiration from the ocean! Students will navigate their way through the process of art making using painting, drawing, collage, mixed media and sculptural techniques. Set against the backdrop of the Port Campus, Georges Island and Halifax Harbour, the world is your oyster when it comes to finding inspiration! Students will work individually and in groups to create maritime masterpieces. All materials are provided.

SC: Computer Animation In Computer Animation, students will learn various techniques of animation using the animation/drawing software Pencil, along with Adobe Photoshop, Apple’s iMovie and other exciting techniques. This course introduces traditional animation principles and techniques and exposes students to animation workflow, from start to finish. Students will work hands-on to create moving images using readily available equipment and technology.

Emphasizing observation and exercises based on both traditional and innovative techniques, students will focus on the concepts that are vital to an artist’s education: composition, line, value, perspective, and colour. Students will strengthen their skills through a series of projects and will learn the importance of the ability to draw and paint from observation.

SC: Screen Printing This summer camp will introduce the skills and techniques of screen printing. Commonly used for t-shirt and poster design, screen printing is a graphic way to create bold and impactful images and fine art prints. Students will develop suitable images for single and multi-coloured prints, learn screen preparation techniques, color layering and D-I-Y tips. The course consists of in class work time, lectures, demonstrations and critiques. Students are encouraged to bring images with them to the first class and may wish to supply a light coloured cotton t-shirt to print onto.

SC: Portfolio Preparation IntensiveThis one-week intensive course focuses on improving the overall quality of portfolios required for application to first-year credit visual arts study. Topics are based on NSCAD and other national art school requirements and include critiquing and selecting work, producing images of work, and writing an essay.  Studio exercises provide an understanding of essential problem-solving and observational drawing skills. Personal critiques of work, recommendations for additional work and a tour of NSCAD are provided. Bring a notebook and pen to first class. Additional supplies are discussed.

Students will re-purpose and transform pants into skirts, wool sweaters into hats, scarves, mitts, and leg warmers, t-shirt makeovers, and pillowcase blouses!
