Dorothee Rosen BFA 05

The word ‘organic’ might be the first thing that comes to mind when viewing Dorothee’s work.  One could find perhaps the tiniest hint of art nouveau in her work -  no surprise for an artist who is often inspired by her photographs of nature.  The form-driven elegance of Dorothée’s work is evidence of her European design sensibility.

Dorothée was born and raised in Germany, and immigrated to Canada in 1989.   In 2005, she graduated from NSCAD University with a major in jewellery design and metalsmithing, and a minor in art history (focus craft).  Dorothée showed outstanding achievements in her studies at NSCAD, and continues to be involved on the international contemporary jewellery scene.  Her university-level training gives her a unique knack for the investigation of formal issues.

“I look for discoveries by working through hundreds of samples.  My design process is therefore material driven:  I design through material, rather than for it.  I am intrigued by the story the metal has to tell and, in designing new work, like to keep my mind open to serendipity.”

Dorothée’s studio is in the North End of Halifax. Everything she makes is designed and made there by hand.  Since 2003, Dorothée has been affiliated with the many prestigious contemporary jewellery galleries across North America, where her iconic “Onefooter” rings , as well as continuously new work, can be found.
