NSCAD's Annual Fund increases donor participation

A group of committed volunteers who met last June at the invitation of NSCAD governor Julia Rivard (BDes 2003) set in motion an energized annual fundraising appeal to alumni and friends. Eight months later, that campaign has already resulted in a 20 per cent increase in the number of donors over last year.

Julia, who chairs the 2011-2012 annual fund called NSCAD NOW, praises her volunteer colleagues Jeff White (BDes 1996), Barbara Lounder (MFA 1984), Rose Zgodzinski (BFA 1975), Leilany Garron-Mills (BFA 2009), Rob Cameron (BDes 2001), Rob Dimitrieff (BFA 2003), and Professor Emeritus Walter Ostrom for their personal endorsements of the annual fund and “giving the annual fund a personal face.”

Systematic messages promoting NSCAD NOW giving purposes--including student awards, the library, and the Anna Leonowens Gallery--were initiated in September. The NSCAD NOW electronic giving site is populated by 17 student and alumni vignettes illustrating NSCAD’s positive impact.

John Mabley, Vice President for University Relations, explains the university’s capability to reach almost 4,000 alumni and friends electronically is the product of a diligent five-year effort of records improvement buttressed by the reintroduction of an active alumni association board of directors in 2010. He also credits the development committee of the Board of Governors for their overall development program volunteer leadership.

Gifts to NSCAD NOW, with a month remaining in the giving year, now exceed $66,000. Private giving for all purposes, including the annual fund, exceeds $645,000 year to date.

Craig Moore (BFA 2000), who is featured in the latest iteration of NSCAD Now, reports his son Dylan recently turned eight years old. For his birthday party, Dylan requested his guests contribute to NSCAD University in lieu of gifts. Dylan, who outlines what he wants to be when he grows up in a school assignment (above), raised $200 for NSCAD Now.
