Looking after my horses occupies a significant portion of each day, and I spend a lot of time looking at them and thinking about them even when I’m not working with them. For decades I have resisted painting them, thinking that really everything that can be said about horses artistically has already been said. Less than a year ago though, I thought what the heck, I’m not trying to make art history, and I began using equine imagery as subject-matter, in particular about the relationship between horses and humans. The work is brand-new, and still at this point about the paint and the narrative. I’m not quite finished with these aspects, and I don’t know where I will go next: I’m thinking some kind of emblematic treatment… or maybe dogs.
