It is landscape as subject matter, with all its complexities, that is
the subject matter of my painting. My paintings are derived from
experience, direct observation, and my photographic
documentation/research, and they depict nature thematically through a
rigorous analysis of light, space, and colour. My artworks address
these fundamental but diverse, overlapping themes: the sensation of
nature as subject matter in its own right, the social construction of
nature, and the aquatic world. In particular I have painted the surface
of water and what we see through the water’s surface for its formal,
aesthetic abstract relationships and for its ineffable space. Each
series of paintings brings aesthetic challenges and issues of thematic
content that carry into the next.
