Emily Falencki
Faculty Exhibitor

Opening reception Wednesday 8 February, 2012

About her exhibition, Emily Falencki offers: “These paintings hang in the balance between traditional portraiture and anonymous representation, representations of individual suffering and loss.   Since 2003, I have collected photographic images as research for this series from a variety of sources, such as photojournalist essays from Chechnya, Northern Ireland, Iraq, Khmer Rouge and Afghanistan.  In addition I have an ongoing collection of found crime photography, death photography, and newspaper cuttings I have referenced for this project. More recently the source imagery comes from Nova Scotia where I currently live.  Some works are images of coal miners who have died on the job.  And some paintings are images based on people who have been found dead, murdered or have gone missing who are in someway connected to Halifax.”
