Paul Cullen is a senior lecturer at AUT University Auckland. Born in Te Awamutu in 1949, he graduated with the BSc from the University of Auckland in 1971, before going on to study at the Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University, Christchurch and completing a Diploma of Fine Arts with Honours in Sculpture. He completed an MFA (1st Class Hons) at the University of Auckland in 2000 and a Doctorate of Fine Arts in 2007.

“My art practice is located in a strategy of fabricational ploys directed, principally, towards physical, sculptural outcomes, and ranging discursively across photo-documents, drawing, object making and installation. Often improvised and makeshift, my project engages with such concerns as site, materiality, and science. Process and humour are recurrent elements in works employing a vocabulary of objects including chairs, tables, pencils and rulers.”
