Comics and Visual Story Telling
    Note the date change

Students will write and draw a 4-8 page short story for a graphic novel. The goal of this course is to integrate basic drawing skills with an exploration of the techniques of visual narrative. Students will be introduced to the elements of plot and visual story telling with an emphasis on panel composition, page layout and story pacing. Examples of comics, graphic novels and storyboards will be provided to supplement the instruction. By the end of the course, each student should have a basic understanding of visual story telling and have scripted and drawn a short story in graphic novel form.

Please bring pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, a ruler and a sketchbook (at least 8.5 x 11 inches) to the first class.

NEW Drawing on Abstraction

The class will look at both non-objective and figurative abstraction in drawing. We will discuss the primary elements that make strong compositions while also broadening their intuitive skills and imagination. This is a good class both for someone who wants to start developing their drawing skills and for those who want to expand on the drawing skills they already have.  Through a series of exercises students will be encouraged to experiment with mark making, composition, black and white, colour and materials to develop their own personal imagery and process of working. Each class will begin with a short presentation on different artists use of abstraction.

Bring pencils (B range), kneaded eraser, white eraser, 9” x 12” sketchbook, compressed charcoal and two bulldog clips to the first class.
