Comics and Visual Story Telling

Students will write and draw a 4-8 page short story for a graphic novel. The goal of this course is to integrate basic drawing skills with an exploration of the techniques of visual narrative. Students will be introduced to the elements of plot and visual story telling with an emphasis on panel composition, page layout and story pacing. Examples of comics, graphic novels and storyboards will be provided to supplement the instruction. By the end of the course, each student should have a basic understanding of visual story telling and have scripted and drawn a short story in graphic novel form. Please bring pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, a ruler and a sketchbook (at least 8.5 x 11 inches) to the first class.
