SC: Illustration Image and Text (Week 1)

This course allows students to explore the relationship between text and image. Throughout the course students will learn to create visual compositions along with successful integration of text, including comics, posters and short stories. Students will be exposed  to a variety of techniques and materials such as gouache, pens and ink, and watercolour.

SC: Stop Motion Animation with Dragonframe (Week 2)

Students creation a short animation using paper cutouts, clay and objects. This is
animated using Dragonframe Stop Motion and set to music. With the aid of in-class exercises students collaboratively workshop theme and music. Students then create a mix of 2D cutouts, sculptures or the art work / clay characters or found objects and animate in groups of 2 - 3. The final animation with music is screened in-class the last day of the camp.

SC: Ceramics: Handbuilt forms and structures (Week 3)

In this class, students will learn several hand building techniques to produce decorative and functional work in individual and team projects. Explorations of form and surface will be encouraged with a wide range of tools, techniques and source material for inspiration.

SC: Fashion (Week 4)

Discover and explore the process of fashion design and construction while learning basic sewing and garment assembly skills. Students will build and develop a mock collection by considering colour, fabric, shape and feel to assemble mood boards depicting their choices and design ideas. Students will shape their potential fashion collection and develop their presentation skills by having a critique session.

SC: Drawing Life (Week 5)

This week will be focused on developing our abilities to draw from observation over memory. Students will study the human form, still life, nature, and moving scenes. With access to live models, and on-site drawing in NSCAD, on the boardwalk and in Point Pleasant, students will work with a number of mediums to develop shading, texture, and other rendering techniques. There is much art to be made in just one week!

SC: The Inside Scoop: tips, tricks, and techniques for   creative writers (Week 6)

Do you enjoy writing? Do you have a story percolating in the back of your brain or do you have something already started? Author James Leck will work with students to develop and write their own piece of fiction. He’ll share tips, tricks, and techniques for generating ideas, creating characters, and developing an exciting plot. He’ll also spend time sharing some of the writing exercises he’s learned as a published author, show you how to revise more effectively, and share what he’s learned about getting your story published. While students may not finish an entire manuscript within the week, they will leave with many strategies and techniques they can use to continue growing as creative writers.

SC: Colours from the Garden  (Week 7)

Join us on a journey where we'll gather plants and other found materials to create magnificent colors on fabrics. Spending time outdoors, we will go on a number of nature walks to collect materials, sketch our surroundings, and create art installations. In the studio we will make dye baths using indigo, marigolds, onion skins and other plants to color fabric, paper, and found objects. Together we will explore mark making using processes such as tie-dye, wrapping, and stitching. These materials will then be transformed into art projects such as: bags, sketchbooks, toys, and masks!

SC: Art in an Urban Environment  (Week 8)

Art makes the world a beautiful place by adding colour, shapes and pattern into the environment. Exploring the ideas presented in graffiti and urban art, students will learn to make art outside in a space beyond paper, galleries and canvas through collaborative and solo projects. Students will learn to attack large scale art, such as murals, and sidewalk art by using the environment that surrounds them.
