NEW Comics and Zine Making - Ages 15-18

Students will explore individual and collaborative comic-making and learn photocopy
processes enabling them to create simple but effective zine publications. Cartooning
(graphic novels, manga, etc.) will be emphasized through improvised comicjam, a fun
and challenging process where entire class draws one comic simultaneously. Using
common and inexpensive materials, such as printer paper, pens, and even dental foss,
students will learn simple photocopy and binding techniques by creating two
additional comic zines. Copies of these zines will be submitted to the local zine archive
as well as by mail to a review publication. Other distribution opportunities, such as
conventions, local stores, community centres, and the internet will also be explored.
Zines are a unique medium for self-expression with endless possibilities, so all skill
levels and styles of drawing are welcome. Students are encouraged to bring drawing
materials with which they are familiar and enjoy, but all materials will be provided.
Class limit is 15.
