Rec Room
Working directly from commonly collected and discarded objects such as vinyl records, books, rugs and slippers, my process is similar to that of the collector, shopper, thrift-hunter who seeks that elusive but attainable gem. The physical properties of the original objects (stained and torn album covers leaning in a stack, a woven carpet unfurling, etc.) are portrayed with materials which are uniform, standard - wood, glue, gesso, papier-mâché, and paint. These materials ultimately fall short in representing the complexity of the inherent physical properties of the original objects, but through the labour of craft, an attempt is made to reconcile this gap. Purporting to sit in for the real thing when they're clearly not, these copies maintain a stubborn presence in the place of the true object.
