When They Meet, is a group of paintings by Halifax artist Nathan Patterson, which depict an array of awkward or unsettling interactions between individuals or groups of individuals. These works are a balance between the natural and the unnatural. Thought each piece has its own unique subject matter they are alike in capturing a moment of exchange between two parties. Common activities such as eating breakfast or swimming with a friend are made abnormal through the inclusion of oddities along with the use of an overtly saturated pallet. The viewer is given a starting point but it is up to them to complete the open ended narratives. This approach is reflected in artists use of social media and photo editing programs as reference material.
