Credit Priority periods are designated periods each year or semester when NSCAD degree and studio certificate students can submit course registration requests and have their requests prioritized according to how many credits they have already earned. During that period, registration for each individual course is granted to students based on the number of credits already obtained. Additional factors that are considered when assigning course placements are found below. For Fall /Winter registration, the Credit Priority period is the same, and so spaces will be allocated based on students’ Fall credits.
After the credit priority period has closed, students are placed in courses on a first-come, first-served basis, regardless of how many credits they have already obtained, and may be waitlisted for up to three courses if a full schedule cannot be provided. This is why it is Very Important for students to submit their registration requests during the Credit Priority Period.
A Late Registration fee of $50 is levied upon returning students who register for the next term following each Credit Priority Period. The fee will be levied immediately following the last working day of the month in which the session starts (i.e. September 20 and January 30). The Fee will be levied on both Fall and Winter Semesters.
Credit Priority Dates for 2010 - 2011 (For Returning Students):Summer 2010 Credit Priority Period: March 9-12, 2010
Fall 2010 and Winter 2011 Credit Priority Period: March 22-April 7 2010
Students who submit completed Course Selection Forms by the designated prioritized registration dates will be assigned courses spaces according to the guidelines for Credit Priority registration (based on maximum earned credits as of the end of fall 2009), and using the following additional priorities in course placement:
- Graduate students and Visual Arts Certificate Students have first priority in all courses with the exception of Foundation courses (unless required for their program)
- Graduate students wishing to select Foundation Fundamentals courses may do so upon special arrangement with the Chair of Foundation Studies or during the summer semester.
- Students who have submitted an Application to Graduate prior to the registration period have second priority after MFA / MDes graduate students in all courses, covered by the course selection period, with the exception of Foundation courses.
- Students who are enrolling in the first semester of the Foundation Program have priority in the following first semester Foundation courses: FNDN1010 and FNDN1100. It may be necessary to assign first semester Foundation students to their second choice for a Foundation Fundamentals course.
- Students who have successfully completed the first semester of the Foundation program have priority in the following courses: Foundation 1300 level courses, 1400 level courses and FNDN1600. Their priority in Foundation Fundamentals courses ceases once they have completed the Foundation Requirement.
- Students who are not included in the above categories, including new transfer students, will be placed in courses in order of accumulated credits.
Notes to the above Placement Process
- The "Major" designation will not be used in determining placement in classes and does not afford a student special priority in certain courses, except in TEXL 2200 and 2100.
- In certain TEXT courses, students with 30-60 credits get priority over all other students. Such priority is indicated in the prerequisite section for those courses.
- Six to nine credits in any one studio area is the recommended number of credits in any one semester. This recommendation may be used by the Office of Student and Academic Services in determining and distributing placement in classes where students have equal accumulated credits.
Note
Priorities in course placement are in effect only during the designated prioritized registration period. Any subsequent registrations will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis for any remaining spaces in courses.
