Health Insurance

Canadian Students

For Canadian students SUNSCAD has negotiated a health plan with Green Sheild, through the Canadian Federation of Students’ National Student Health Network.

The student health plan is a mandatory plan that all full time students are automatically enrolled in and charged for. It is a yearly plan that Starts Sept 1 and goes through until Aug 31. If your schooling takes you outside of Nova Scotia your insurance will cover travel for 60 days; periods of longer travel will require you to top up your insurance coverage.

A Green Shield card is given to a student when they are first entered into the plan in their first term.  They do not receive a new card every year because the cards don’t expire.
If a student already has extended coverage and would like to opt-out of the plan; they must do so during the opt-out period on their first term that they start school. If they start in the winter term the opt-out period would be Jan 1-31.  If they miss the opt-out period they will not be able to opt-out of the plan until the next year. During this same period student can pay extra and opt-in dependants to the plan. For more info on family opt-in please speak to the SUNSCAD Resource coordinator (902) 494-8127 in the SUNSCAD office.

To opt-out during the opt-out period; visit http://greenshield.ca/StudentCentre then click on NSCAD, then click Opt Out.  Note: The student is responsible for providing confirmation of opting out. Reimbursement cheques will be ready in the SUNSCAD office a few weeks after the deadline.

For any issues arising from the Health Insurance Coverage, please contact the Resource Coordinator in the SUNSCAD office. E-mail nscad.ca or phone
(902) 494-8127.
