From the Board of Governors Meeting of March 31, 2016
On Solid Footing With a Balanced Budget
NSCAD University’s Board of Governors approved a balanced operating budget for 2016-17. The balanced budget represents several years of solid, steady progress and a commitment to sustainability as laid out in NSCAD’s Framework for Sustainability. It also delivers on the expectations of both the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education and the NSCAD Board of Governors.
Towards Realizing NSCAD’s Bold Vision
The board approved a direction recommended by NSCAD President Dianne Taylor-Gearing in her President’s Report. As expressed in NSCAD’s 2015-2020 Strategic Framework, the university is focused on a sustained period of growth, vibrancy, and prosperity. At the meeting, the Board received the NSCAD University Facilities Planning and Space Study Final Report, as prepared by Lydon Lynch Architects. The consultants have been working with NSCAD faculty and staff throughout the winter on a functional space program, focusing on space and facilities needs for every department of the university. A decision was made last fall (2015) to plan for the transition from NSCAD’s historic downtown campus by 2019, with one option being the intensification of NSCAD’s two other sites, the Academy Building and the Port Campus, a leased facility. While intensification remains an important focus, the board has also determined the more immediate priority is to develop feasibility plans that explore opportunities to collaborate with other cultural sector partners in the province. Key to realizing this new and bold vision will be in taking the time to confirm that NSCAD is able to ensure long-term sustainability and contribute fully to a thriving cultural economy – something that benefits all Nova Scotians.
Robert (Rob) Cameron was appointed to the position of Interim Vice-Chair of NSCAD Board of Governors. The appointment will be effective March 31, 2016, to September 2016.
In the Summer of 2015, a consultant was engaged to complete a review of all of NSCAD’s policies and determine where there were gaps. A Policy Framework was developed which was approved by the Board of Governors in September 2015.
At the March 31st meeting, the Board received and approved sixteen policies where the approval authority under the Policy Framework is the Board of Governors. The Board received for information purposes only an additional twelve policies.
NSCAD’s Governance Office will announce the issuance of all twenty-eight policies.
The NSCAD Board of Governors thanked Gabriel Soligo and Julie Hall, SUNSCAD representatives for their service and commitment to the Board of Governors over the last year. The Board commended Mr. Soligo and Ms. Hall for their commitment and professionalism.
