Miss Foxine goes Hollywood

Theresa Lee Capell models a pair of her nature-inspired earrings.

There’s nothing modest about Theresa Lee Capell’s necklaces and earrings. Under the name Miss Foxine, she incorporates found objects including pine cones, maple keys, butterfly wings, pieces of lace, shells and sea glass into statement pieces that would look right at home on the red carpet.

And so she thought: Miss Foxine jewellery + red carpet = Got to get to the Globes Globes.

“It’s warm and there’s no snow up to my knees,” reports Theresa cheerfully, from Los Angeles where she’s transplanted the booth that’s normally at Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market to the Golden Globes’ VIP Gifting Suite.

“I needed to push myself,” she continues. “My pieces are glamorous and Hollywood—I had to come to where they’d fit in.”

A 2013 graduate with a keen sense of entrepreneurship (she says textile designer Barry Roode BFA 1989 who taught the class in entrepreneurship at NSCAD before going to the Savannah College of Art and Design was motivating), Theresa sells her work at the farmers market and through an Etsy shop online. But she wanted more buzz for what she was doing, and looked to fellow NSCAD grad Angela Arsenault (BFA 2004) for inspiration. Angela gave her business a boost after showing her Angela Grace line of jewellery at gifting suites at the Emmy Awards and Cannes Film Festival a few years back.

Theresa’s hope is that not only will some Hollywood celebrities pick up her pieces, but that shops back home in Halifax will be more receptive to carrying her work as well. Haligonian Jill Franklin of Jill’s Chocolates is doing the same.

“I’ve got a passion to create and to be my own boss,” says Theresa, originally from Aylesford in the Annapolis Valley. “If you put enough passion and drive and research into your work, you can make it as an artist and do what you love. I believe that wholeheartedly.”
