Let's Talk

Greetings from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University), in Halifax, Canada! We are one of North America’s oldest and most distinguished independent art and design schools.

Online information sessions every Monday

Ask us about housing, cost of living, and visas – we have experts on international study ready to talk! We’d also love to look at your work and discuss our programs.

Did you know that Americans can study full-time here for under $18,000 USD per year?

As an American student at NSCAD, you can:

Have an international experience across the border in a progressive, safe, arts-friendly city while paying the equivalent of state school tuition

Save up to 60% in fees. The cost of a four-year degree at NSCAD equals the cost of one to two years tuition at most private American universities.

Go on exchange at a top tier American university like CalArts, RISD, or Pratt – while paying NSCAD tuition rates.

Be eligible for scholarships of up to $5000 USD

Work part-time in Canada, supplementing your income.

Make it till you make it

At NSCAD, you will have nearly unlimited access to your own studio space, using some of the best facilities in Canada. Our galleries host over 125 student shows per year and artists from around the world visit year-round. You will take in beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean from our Port Campus and work in a fantastic warren of Victorian loft studios on our Fountain campus.

Where a NSCAD degree takes you
Whole cultural movements have sprung from inside our walls, and our alumni are art and design leaders around the world. They are curators at MoMA in New York City, Oscar-winning animators in Los Angeles, directors at ad agencies in London, and Bollywood costume designers in Mumbai.

“I’m such a fan of art school education. Every day I am immersed in the kind of decision-making we learned about at NSCAD.”

John Kahrs
(BFA 1990)

Academy Award winner for Best Animated Short for his film Paperman. He has worked on many of the world’s most successful animated films including A Bug’s Life, The Incredibles, and Monsters Inc.

“All those conversations — about conceptualizing and narrating strategies — all that learning goes right into my work…every day.”

Paula Fairfield
(BFA 1984)

An Emmy award winner for outstanding sound design on Game of Thrones and an eight-time nominee for her work on shows like Lost.

“The diverse skills I learned at NSCAD set me on a path to work around the world translating emerging technologies into people-centric experiences for companies like Google, Twitter, Nike, and IDEO.”

Jess Myra
(BDES 2008)

Design Lead & Manager at Google AI

“NSCAD fostered a sense of community that allowed me to forge lasting connections with fellow artists. My undergraduate degree was a joyful and critical experience that helped shape my perspective and practice.”

Ambera Wellmann

Wellmann is an internationally celebrated artist who splits her time between New York and Mexico City.

Make your mark on Halifax

Tucked away on the east coast of Canada, Halifax is an exceptional playground for artists. Half the size of Portland, OR, but bigger than Providence, RI, we have an energetic, do-it-yourself spirit and a supportive creative community that welcomes new ideas.

If you can imagine it, you can make it happen in Halifax. Students, faculty and alumni have started artist-run centres, collectives, arthouse cinemas, galleries, small presses, cafés, club nights, and festivals.

There are daily two-and-a-half-hour flights to New York or Toronto, and our campus is a 30-minute drive from some of the best beaches and surf conditions in North America, on the wild windswept shores of the North Atlantic.
