Course + Content

You will be taught by skilled instructors with strong artistic practices who recognize you as a fellow artist, united by a dedication to the medium and the urge to experiment.

Painting courses aim to produce versatile practitioners who are able to move dynamically through contemporary art scenes. Students will learn observational painting before moving onto abstract, developing practical skills and proficiency and expanding to unconventional uses of materials, surfaces, and processes.

In the Fine Arts program, courses cover practical skill development and concepts in four traditional arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking) allowing the student to mix and match techniques and forms for their own unique aesthetic.

FOUNDATION PROGRAM: You will start your NSCAD degree with an immersive Foundation studies program. This first year introduces you to all the disciplines and practices we teach at NSCAD, and it will equip you with the critical and creative skills you need to thrive in art and design school.

In Studio

NSCAD’s top-notch Fine Arts facilities are split between the downtown Fountain campus and south end Port campus. After Foundation year, you will have nearly unlimited access to your own studio space – an essential component of a studio-intensive degree. Facilities include:

  • a spray booth
  • woodshop
  • an individual stretcher-making area

Our faculty and technicians come from diverse backgrounds and are accomplished artists, scholars, educators, and leaders in their craft—offering students a wide range of skills, information and opinion. Through mentorship, practice and discussion, you will form and articulate an awareness of the historical and conceptual roots of your work.

Careers

A Fine Arts degree with a specialization in painting provides graduates with many options in the cultural sector. Many go on to become practicing artists, illustrators, animators, film industry workers, curators, arts administrators, and entrepreneurs.
