Discover many experiential learning opportunities.

To go on exchange to another university is to push yourself in new cultural environments and into the lives of others across the globe. It’s more than going to another university. Students become cultural interpreters, both when they travel and when they return home. Whether it is an internship, design practicum, or working in service to the community, NSCAD students have many opportunities to apply and increase their learning in real-world situations. Closer to home, NSCAD University has partnered with several Nova Scotia communities to offer recent NSCAD graduates a one-year residency in a community-provided studio.

Student exchanges.

To go on exchange to another university is to push yourself in new cultural environments and into the lives of others across the globe. It’s more than going to another university. Students become advocates of the arts, and cultural interpreters, both when they travel and when they return home.

Students can engage in studies away from the university in two unique ways: Independent Off Campus Study allows students to devise individual plans of study within Canada orabroad while registered for courses listed in the university calendar.

Tuition and fees are paid to NSCAD, which makes studying in the United States or Europe very affordable, and there are a few NSCAD University scholarships available to students who are participating in an Off-Campus Study Program.

Internships.

Whether it is an internship, design practicum, or working in service to the community, NSCAD students have many opportunities to apply and increase their learning in real-world situations. Students are matched with professionals in their desired field, working locally or internationally. Many partnerships already exist and new ones are added each year.

Here are a few examples of how internships work:

Internship/ Community Service Learning is a studio course that can be undertaken for three credits, six credits and in exceptional circumstances nine credits.

Research internships are available as a three credit LAS course with a primary focus on research work with an appropriate organization.

NSCAD students may apply for a design practicum as part of their program in their fourth year of study.

Studio residencies.

Closer to home, NSCAD University has partnered with several Nova Scotia communities to offer recent NSCAD graduates a one-year residency in a community-provided studio. Residents work with local elementary and secondary students and offer workshops and public lectures while continuing and building their individual studio practice. Residencies are currently in Lunenburg, New Glasgow, Sydney, and Dartmouth.
