At NSCAD, our state-of-the-art metal shop is a jewel in our Port Campus. Under close supervision from our faculty and technicians, students learn how to weld centuries-old metalsmithing techniques with contemporary art education to create a unique form of artistic expression.
Looking onto Halifax harbour, the NSCAD metal shop fully immerses students into the basics of metal smithing with a hands-on approach.
New students will take an introductory seven-week course to learn important safety protocols and how to use the materials to achieve their goals. They will also learn how to work with power tools and develop skills like blacksmithing, welding, plasma cutting, metal forming, grinding, and more.
For the final project, students have the choice to create a simple table/stool or design something of their own. At the end of the course, student will feel more confident, more independent, and more self-sufficient as an artist.
Please note: To adhere to student safety policies, the metal shop can only enrol up to 14 students at a time.
Because our metal shop is open to students from all programs, we can accommodate nearly any request, from wearable art, jewellery, sculpture, fashion, even ceramics projects. This interdisciplinary approach involving multiple mediums gives NSCAD students the opportunity to push the boundaries of their work.
