At NSCAD, Jewellery and Metalsmithing are intimate, powerful forms of art, capable of carrying complex narratives. This is a place to find your unique artistic vision, learn to work with different metals, and master a versatile array of processes that will confidently launch your creative career in jewellery design and fine craft sectors.
Under the guidance of master metalsmiths and certified technicians, you will explore both traditional benchwork and modern cross-disciplinary practices. The Jewellery and Metalsmithing courses are intensive but deeply satisfying and highly creative.
Facilities
Located on our historic Fountain Campus, our Jewellery and Metalsmithing facilities consist of five interconnected studios that offers one of the most comprehensive and well-equipped studio setups in North America.
- The Main Fabrication Studios (Fountain Campus): Three interconnected main studio classrooms housing over 40 spacious, individual student workbenches, each fully equipped with dedicated torches, flexible shafts, and specialized hand tools.
- The Centrifugal Casting Suite: A dedicated, ventilated space designed for hot metal casting workflows, including wax-carving setups, burnout kilns, and vacuum casting machinery.
- Polishing & Chemical Preparation Rooms: Isolated safety environments featuring industrial dust-collection polishing lathes, vibratory tumblers, acid etching, electroforming, and electroplating setups.
- The Machining, Lathe, & Milling Room: A heavy-duty fabrication zone equipped with lathes, drill presses, hydraulic forming presses, and metal-shaping tools.
- Enameling and Powder-Coating Studio: A specialized space housing high-temperature enameling kilns and professional spray booths for applying vibrant color and protective finishes to metal surfaces.
- Advanced Digital Prototyping & Photo Area: A high-tech corner featuring SLA 3D printers and micro-welders for precision work, alongside a dedicated documentation zone for capturing high-fidelity photos of finished pieces.
