Photography

One-on-one guidance from technicians will give students the skills needed to use industry-level equipment, and confidence in utilizing different techniques to bring their vision to life—from small-scale photo shoots to large-form gallery-ready artworks.

Location:

What To Expect

Covering approximately 5100 square feet, the photography department is located on the 3rd floor of the Bell and Granville Buildings at Fountain Campus.

Students can expect a friendly and collaborative environment where no idea is too big or too complex. Technicians will work with students, recommend gear and equipment, and provide technical assistance to ensure a smooth execution of the project.

The photography department also acts as a service centre to the entire school. Students, alumni, staff and faculty can book cameras and other equipment for non-academic projects on a 24-hour basis. However, some equipment are restricted to classroom use only.

Facilities

Although our facilities are available for the use of the entire NSCAD community, some restrictions do apply for those who are not enrolled in a photography course.

The photography department houses the following facilities:

  • 1 Lighting Studio (D360) with flash and tungsten lighting systems
  • 2 Computer Studios (Macintosh D370A, D393A) for digital imaging
  • 1 large-format inkjet printing and scanning lab (D393B)
  • Finishing/multipurpose Room (for matting & dry-mounting), etc. (D370 A & B)
  • Copy Stand room and camera scanning; digital and film (D361)
  • Two ‘smart’ classroom spaces (D350, D391)
  • 1 large black and white gang darkrooms with processor (D380A & B)
  • 2 specialized darkrooms (D370-4 and 8)
  • 4 black and white film processing rooms (D381-4)

The lighting studio, gang darkroom, and certain pieces of equipment may require in-class demonstrations or orientation by a technician.

Equipment

The Equipment Room (affectionately known as “The Cage”) is where you borrow equipment for assignments, personal projects and request technical assistance.

The photography department has a large selection of equipment available to the NSCAD community, including but not limited to:

Students must be competent with the equipment before booking them.
