One of our renowned Fine Art program’s four specializations, students who choose Sculpture as their focus learn how to make art in three (and sometimes four!) dimensions, using any and all physical materials in myriad combinations to manifest their ideas into real-world objects. This track is for visionaries who have an eye to turn the everyday into creative artifacts.

Course + Content

You will be taught by skilled instructors with strong artistic practices who recognize you as a fellow artist, united by a dedication to the medium and the urge to experiment.

Sculpture courses involve multiple tactile materials including wood, metal, plastics, and stone that can be used in tandem with digital media and design to create something both timeless and incredibly current. Students will also examine sculpture in an historical context while exploring contemporary sculpture as it relates to technology, interdisciplinary practices, and public art. As an essentially limitless art form materially, students are encouraged to incorporate other disciplines including textiles, film, performance, and metals.

In the Fine Arts program, courses cover practical skill development and concepts in four traditional arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking) allowing the student to mix and match techniques and forms for their own unique aesthetic.

FOUNDATION PROGRAM: You will start your NSCAD degree with an immersive Foundation studies program. This first year introduces you to all the disciplines and practices we teach at NSCAD, and it will equip you with the critical and creative skills you need to thrive in art and design school.

In Studio

The Fine Arts facilities are divided between the Fountain and Port campuses. You will have nearly unlimited access to sculpture studios, working in front of huge windows looking onto the Halifax harbour. You will have access to wood, metal, and digital fabrication shops, as well as a foundry. As a scultptor, you can use any materials, including textiles, wood, plastics, metals, film, and video. You can also apply for materials subsidies through our Materials Fund which distributes up to $25,000 per year to NSCAD stusents.

Our faculty and technicians come from diverse backgrounds and are accomplished artists, scholars, educators, and leaders in their craft—offering students a wide range of skills, information and opinion. Through mentorship, practice and discussion, you will form and articulate an awareness of the historical and conceptual roots of your work.
