Ufuk Gueray

Background

Ufuk Ali Gueray is an interdisciplinary artist of Turkish background whose painting-centered practice explores the intersections of cultural heritage, identity, and modern technology. Born in Herrenberg, Germany, they have lived in Germany, Canada, and Scotland. Ufuk holds a BFA in Studio Art and French Studies from Concordia University and an MFA in Fine Art from the Glasgow School of Art. They are Assistant Professor of Fine Arts (Painting) at NSCAD University.
Their work has been supported by significant funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council, Arts Nova Scotia, and the Winnipeg Arts Council. Ufuk was also awarded the prestigious Major Arts Grant by the Manitoba Arts Council.

CURRENT RESEARCH AND/OR CREATIVE PRACTICE

Ufuk‘s current research delves into the ancient Turkic divination text Irk Bitig, reimagining these traditional narratives within contemporary contexts through the integration of AI and digital media. Their practice, rooted in materials-based painting techniques, expands into installation and generative art, exploring how modern technology can engage with and reinterpret cultural heritage.

SIGNIFICANT PUBLICATIONS/EXHIBITIONS

Recent solo exhibitions include Oracle Baby at Hermes Gallery, Halifax; Atilla’s Mirror Shop at Neutral Ground Artist-Run Centre, Regina, Saskatchewan; and Atilla’s Mirror Shop at Platforms Project, Athens, Greece. Their work has been featured in publications such as Border Crossings and the Winnipeg Free Press. Ufuk received an Honourable Mention in the 2014 RBC Canadian Painting Competition, which was exhibited at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Quebec. Significant residencies include the Media Arts Scholarship at the Centre for Art Tapes, Halifax; the Brooklyn Visual Arts Residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York; and the Deep Bay Artists’ Residency at Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba.
