Artist Statement

Derek Fordjour, born in Memphis, Tennessee to Ghanaian parents, is a multidisciplinary artist whose richly layered work draws from themes of sport, pageantry, and Black cultural memory.

A graduate of Morehouse College with advanced degrees from Harvard University and Hunter College, Fordjour’s practice extends from vibrant paintings and installations to major public commissions, including projects for the High Line and New York’s MTA Arts & Design program. Fordjour has been featured in Trevor Noah’s What Now? Podcast, and reviewed in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Financial Times.

His work is held in public and private collections including Studio Museum in Harlem, Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Royal Collection in London.

This talk is presented as part of NSCAD’s Visiting Artist program, supported by the Daglish Family Foundation Visiting Artist Fund.
