Course + Content

The Expanded Media program offers students the chance to explore and discover electronics, sound design, robotics, video art, and varying scales of installation while studying the fundamentals of photography, live performance, and cinema. Building technical skills in newer media and fine arts fundamentals, students will hone multiple approaches both digital and practical to realize their wildest ideas and become leaders in the tech, visual media, and sound spheres.

This program suits a curious, experimental, driven maker who wants to break rules, interrogate accepted media practices, and provoke discussions. Students will tap into NSCAD’s extensive alumni network worldwide while using the city of Halifax as its playground, creating work alongside similarly individualistic, ambitious artists.

FOUNDATION PROGRAM: You will start your NSCAD degree with an immersive Foundation studies program. This first year introduces you to all the disciplines and practices we teach at NSCAD, and it will equip you with the critical and creative skills you need to thrive in art and design school.

In Studio

Expanded Media students practice in the Academy building, where they’ll have access to topline equipment and facilities including:

• a 3,000-square-foot soundstage
• editing bays
• animation labs
• recording studios
• an electronics lab

Students will have access to these studios, their own studio spaces, and to all NSCAD facilities.

Careers

Throughout their time at NSCAD, students will have the opportunity to exhibit at the Anna Leonowens Gallery, intern at local centres, galleries, and museums. In their final year, they’ll create a thesis project that will be exhibited in a campus group show with their fellow travellers.

Expended Media graduates move into many art forms and media careers, working in contemporary art, sound design, podcasting, augmented reality, video games, film post-production, and animation.
